    @jayluketa The buckets no matter what will not be airtight. That is why you must use mylar bags and O2 absorbers in conjunction with the buckets.

    @Glen1040 If your using mylar bags you should be good to go. As long as the buckets didnt have acid,zombie virus etc. You’ll be ok. You want to use the cleanest buckets or ones you know were used for food. IE pickle buckets etc.

    I got some new plastic buckets today from the farm stock feed store. I’m not sure if they are food grade on even if that maters?

    Even though it’s yellow I’m sure the rice is more than good. 17 years of food storage is mighty impressive. Do you know of any method to seal the buckets themselves airtight?

    @500rancher I have used both. 7 mils are harder to seal but are sturdier for sure.

    its not the fact that mre’s grow mold or what not they lose there nutritional value if you ate nothing but old mre’s for a year you would have malunutrtion

    another question, can i do this type of food storage to seeds so i can grow a garden each year. i would do it on a smaller scale with just enough to grow a garden. if things go bad we might not be able to get down to the feed and seed store to buy seed. it would also cost more by then.
