Year’s Supply

Getting a Year’s Supply

When beginning your food storage program, start by accumulating a 3-month supply of nonperishable items you already use on a daily basis. This may include mixes, canned meals, baking supplies, and so forth.

Next, build up a full year’s supply of grains and legumes that are packaged for long-term storage. Do not store oily items such as brown rice that go rancid.

The final step is to acquire a year’s supply of the remaining items suggested here, as well as any others you may need or desire.

This calculator allows a lot of leeway for personal needs and tastes. Store what you will actually use. Take into account any food allergies or restrictions that members of your family may have. Use common sense.

Do not go into debt to get your supply. Build it up gradually but steadily. Keep it rotated so that you do not lose money by having to throw out old products.

For an excellent rotation plan, we recommend the book Emergency Food in a Nutshell by Leslie Probert and Lisa Harkness.

For shelving that automatically rotates your rood storage, we recommend the Shelf Reliance auto-rotation products.
