How Much Do You Need to Store?

This handy calculator will help you figure out what works for your family. 52 weeks is a year’s supply, but you may calculate for any other number of weeks.

Enter the number of weeks’ storage you want, as well as the number of adults and children in your family. (Children 12 and over count as adults because they tend to eat full portions.)

Always rotate your stored food into your normal diet, using up the oldest products first. This will save you a lot of money and prevent waste.

Recommended Basic Food Storage Amounts
Each category below gives you a variety of choices and a total weight.
You should store the items you like to eat and know how to use. Weights (except fats) are for dry or dehydrated foods—freeze-dried foods will weigh less.


Grain (includes wheat, white rice, oats, corn, barley, pasta, etc.):  lbs.
Legumes (dried beans, split peas, lentils, nuts, etc.):  lbs.
Dairy Products (powdered milk, cheese powder, canned cheese, etc.):  lbs.
Sugars (white sugar, brown sugar, syrup, molasses, honey, etc.):  lbs.
Leavening Agents (Yeast, baking powder, powdered eggs, etc.):  lbs.
Salt (Table salt, sea salt, soy sauce, bouillon, etc.):  lbs.
Fats (Vegetable oils, shortening, canned butter, etc.):  lbs.
Water:  gallons*

*NOTE: The amount of water shown is a minimal 2-week supply. It is rarely practical to store more. We suggest that you store this amount and supplement it with a good water filter and/or water purification kit.
